Operation sequence

All types of operations are performed as outpatient treatments, which means that you can return home after a stay of only a few hours at our center.

The eyes are rendered insensitive by the application of special drops, and you will therefore not feel any pain (without needle!). The operation takes about 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the type of treatment, for each eye. (Exceptions: measures aimed at corneal stabilisation, corneal transplants, etc.)

Often both eyes can even be treated surgically on the same day – should this not be the case, you will be told so immediately after the comprehensive pre-examination.

After the treatment you can leave the eye center  Dr. Aus der Au in Freiburg after 1 to 2 hours without eye bandages.

We recommend that you have someone accompanying you on the way home, or driving you home. In general you can drive again yourself on the day after the operation, after a first control visit at our center.

You will already have been informed in detail before the operation about the precautions to take and rules to follow after the treatment: during the first week you must wear protective glasses during the day, and a special eye protection during the night. Depending on the type of treatment, you will have to apply various eye drops for a few days to a few weeks. You will receive this information also in writing so that you can consult our instructions quietly after your return home.

After the treatment, you may feel a slight pain from time to time, for about 24 hours. This can be alleviated by appropriate medication. Some treatment methods can lead to a foreign-body feeling (for instance PRK, Lasek and Crosslinking).

As a rule, you can get back to work or to your daily routine after 1-3 days (depending on the type of treatment).

After some special procedures (such as corneal transplantation, etc.) the time required until a good vision is regained is longer.

Avoid any dusty environment. Visits to saunas and solariums, swimming, and certain types of sports and ball games (handball, volleyball, etc.) should be avoided for at least 2 weeks. After the detailed preliminary examination, i.e. before the operation, you will be handed out a specific leaflet on the precautions to take and rules to follow after a surgical eye treatment.

After the treatment, patients are usually still somewhat sensitive to light and must take a few days time until the eye has mostly recovered and sees well again. But the healing phase is usually short, the limitations in daily life minimal. The healing process is aided by the use of special eye drops. Normally 1 to 2 follow-up controls are required after the operation.
